GrandTuhon was born in the Philippines on May 5, 1938. Starting at the age of six, he was taught Pekiti-Tirsia, by his grandfather Conrado Tortal, a system founded by the Tortal family in 1897. In 1972 he moved to the United States and shortly after began to teach his family martial art fighting system. Up to that point, it was a fighting system that had never been taught outside of the Philippines.
Today, Gaje continues to teach his art of Pekiti Tirsia to students of martial arts, personal security, law enforcement and militaries worldwide. He has been featured on the covers of several top martial arts magazines. He is a member of the Martial Arts Hall of Fame and the Karate Hall of Fame.
Gaje has trained notable martial artists such as Dan Inosanto, Eddie Jafri, Tom Bisio, Erwin Ballarta, William McGrath, Philip Gelinas, Mick Alcaraz, Kanishka Sharma, Leslie Buck Jr., and Rommel Tortal (nephew). Inosanto said about Pekiti-Tirsia Kali, "In the field of strategic knife defense, the Pekiti-Tirsia System of Kali is one of the most progressive, practical and sophisticated systems of tactical knife self-defense and edged weapon awareness that I have encountered."
Gaje, Inosanto, and Jafri were responsible for the creation of a fusion martial art that incorporated the styles of the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Inosanto later coined the term Maphilindo to represent the style's origin and founded Maphilindo Silat.
Tuhon Philip began his training in a style of karate known as Chito Ryu at the age of 14. Since then he has trained in many styles including Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Kali, Muay Thai, Judo, Kempo, Kajukenbo, Jun Fan-Jeet Kune Do, Silat, and Capoeira. He obtained black belts in Kempo (1973) and Kajukenbo (1975). In the 1980s he received a Muay Thai instructor credential under Tom Harink after meeting him in 1985.
Philip Gelinas began his training in the Filipino Martial Arts in 1981. He has been elevated to the rank of Mandala-Tuhon (12th Hagdan) by GrandTuhon Leo Gaje and is a Full Instructor under Guro Dan Inosanto, and holds the rank of first tier fighter and Guro in Dog Brothers Martial Arts. He won the Grand Championship at the International Kali Grand Championships in Nashville, Tn. in 1988 and is an original member of the Dog Brothers stick-fighting group appearing in their highly successful video tape series Real Contact Stick Fighting. He owns and runs the Gelinas Academy of Mixed Martial Arts. A guiding force for Combat Warrior Academy and a mentor to Tuhon Jesse. He is one of the founding Dog Brothers as well as one of the founders of the Brazilian Top Team Canada network of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academies in Canada.
Tuhon Michael Alcaraz also known as Tuhon Mick or TM. -Ranked as Tuhon 10th Hagdan by GrandTuhon and presently the Global Head of PTK Katipunan -TM is also the current Chief of Operations of the PTK ASTACOM (PTK Association of Tactical And Combat Instructors. -Director, PTK Pilipinas -Served in the Philippine Security Service under the Office of the President -Presently as Security Consultant based in Manila, Philippines. A guiding light and force, TM is a consistent leader and mentor to all he trains and guide. He is one of the premier consultant to Combat Warrior Academy and a Mentor to Tuhon Jesse. He has trained numerous organizations throughout the world and continues to promulgate the tenets of Pekiti Tirsia Kali. A very sound technical tactician, his skills are superior and yet he is the most humble warrior you will ever see. Constantly diligent in his duties as Director of Operations within ASTACOM, he continues to oversee all aspects of training, mentorship, and leadership to many warriors and practitioners around the world. His motivation and dedication to duty is impeccable and he is one that all should emulate and a prolific Leader, Warrior, and Mentor.
